Introduction

Te Korowai ō Te Tai-o-Marokura Strategy protects the marine environment in Kaikōura.

Current management measures

In 2014, the Kaikōura (Te Tai ō Marokura) Marine Management Act 2014 was passed to implement key elements of the Kaikōura Marine Strategy.

The Act established management measures to ‘assist the preservation, protection, and sustainable and integrated management of the coastal and marine environment and biological diversity of Te Tai o Marokura’.

These management measures are:

  • an advisory body, the Kaikōura Marine Guardians
  • the Hikurangi Marine Reserve
  • Te Rohe o Te Whānau Puha Whale Sanctuary
  • The Ōhau New Zealand Fur Seal Sanctuary
  • the Mangamaunu Mātaitai, Oaro Mātaitai and Te Waha o te Marangai Mātaitai
  • Te Taumanu o Te Waka a Māui Taiāpure and Oaro-Haumuri Taiāpure
  • amended recreational fishing regulations.

Kaikōura/Te Tai-o-Marokura marine management review 2024

A 10-year review of the Kaikōura Marine Area management measures is being undertaken as required by the Kaikōura (Te Tai ō Marokura) Marine Management Act 2014 (Section 8).

The review is to assess the ‘operation and effectiveness’ of those management measures.

On direction of Ministers, DOC and Fisheries New Zealand will now carry out the review, which will include public consultation and involvement of the Kaikōura Marine Guardians and local tangata whenua, Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura.

Terms of reference for the review (PDF, 323K).

Public consultation is expected to take place in 2025.
