Waikanae is located on the Kapiti Coast 60 km north of Wellington.
The Waikana Estuary is located on the beach between Paraparaumu and Waikanae. The tracks in this area are to the east of Waikanae.
The nationally-significant Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve protects a natural mosaic of freshwater lakelets, saltwater lagoons and marshes, tidal sand flats and sandy beach at the mouth of the Waikanae River.
