Pigeon Bay Walkway

Located in Banks Peninsula area in the Canterbury region

This walkway follows the eastern side of Pigeon bay out to the head of the bay and has spectacular coastal views.

This walkway follows the eastern side of Pigeon bay towards the head of the bay. It's well signposted and follows a grassy vehicle track of easy grade. The track has spectacular coastal views, tītoki trees, akeake, and native passion vine/kōhia at their southern limits.

From the Pigeon Bay Domain a gate gives access to the track which follows the edge of the bay briefly before climbing higher onto open grassland, showcasing the coastal views. Avoid the occasional clump of ongaonga, the native stinging nettle.

From the end of the track there are magnificent views of the headlands and bays of Banks Peninsula. Return the same way that you came. Do not attempt to go beyond the end of the track as there is a significant fall risk.

From Christchurch follow the Christchurch to Akaroa Highway to Hilltop, then turn left along Summit Road to the Pigeon Bay Road turnoff. Follow this road to the coast, turn right on to Wharf Road. The walking track starts at the end of Wharf Road, by the yacht club building in the Pigeon Bay Domain.

  • There is significant fall risk at the end of the track. Take care.
  • Return to Pigeon Bay via track and not through the farm or lodge area.
  • Stay on the marked track. This walkway travels over private land with farming operations.
  • Two thirds of the track from the start to Headland track end point follows a farm shingled road. Take care as farm vehicles use this road.
  • Leave gates as you find them and use stiles for fence crossings.
  • Most of the track is open and exposed to the weather.
  • No camping or mountain biking.
  • Toilets and picnic tables at the Pigeon Bay Domain.
  • Respect farm and patrons. This track is open at the farm's goodwill.
