Introduction

Visitors are being welcomed to the DOC Pipiriki Field Base on Wednesday 16 August.

Date:  10 August 2023

The opportunity to enjoy a casual kai and kōrero/chat with staff is part of Conservation Week, which will be running from 14 to 20 August.

DOC Ranger Eddie Te Huia says people are encouraged to ‘take action for nature’ this Conservation Week.

“Throwing open the doors at Pipiriki is an opportunity for the community to meet the team, learn about our mahi, and get inspired to take action for nature at home.

“We really want to connect with our local whānau, hear the community’s aspirations, and see how we can provide support to achieve those goals.”

Pipiriki is the southern gateway to the Whanganui National Park, one of the largest remaining tracts of lowland forest remaining in the North Island, with DOC mahi in the area ranging from hut, campsite, and track maintenance to protection of whio and kiwi populations.

“Five DOC rangers currently live in Pipirki and we are regularly on the awa, heading into the park – this is a day you’ll find us at the base!

“We are privileged to care for this precious whenua and look forward to seeing you Wednesday 16 August 10am-2pm.”

Kai will be provided, and Victor rat traps will be available to take home.
