Submissions closed 22 September 2023.The Minister of Conservation gives notice of the intention to grant a 30 year concession under section 17Q of the Conservation Act 1987.

Location of proposed activity: 43.7685° S, 170.6318° E. Sites maps are included in the First Determination Report below. The land for the occupation of Rex Simpson Hut is approximately 2 km south of Mount Gerald in Te Kahui Kaupeka Conservation Park. Rex Simpson Hut and its ancillary structures are owned by Alpine Recreation Canterbury Limited.
Summary of proposal:
Alpine Recreation Canterbury Limited are a guiding company that offer trekking, climbing and skiing trips and courses. They own and manage Rex Simpson Hut, which is used as part of their guiding operations. This activity has previously been authorised by the Department for CA-222-ACC. No changes to the land or buildings are proposed.
Concession applied for:
The applicant has applied for a Lease and Easement to own, occupy and maintain Rex Simpson Hut for the purpose of providing accommodation for guided clients and members of the public for a term of 30 years.
The concession has now been approved in principle for 39955-ACC under the Conservation Act 1987.
