Application for construction by Thames Coromandel District Council

DOC has approved Thames Coromandel District Council’s application to construct and maintain a public boardwalk at Whangamatā Marginal Strip (alongside Esplanade Drive/Whangamatā Beach).This application wasnotified under section 17SC of the Conservation Act 1987.

Summary of proposal: The Minister of Conservation has received an application from Thames Coromandel District Council to construct a public boardwalk on public conservation land Whangamatā Marginal Strip. The Marginal Strip runs alongside Esplanade Drive.
Note this application only refers to Stage 1 of the proposed boardwalk construction. Stage 1 of the boardwalk will start at one end of Esplanade Drive (outside the Whangamatā Surf Life Saving Club) and finish at the other end of Esplanade Drive.
At present the Thames Coromandel District Council is not seeking to construct a public boardwalk beyond Stage 1. Any future efforts to construct additional parts of the boardwalk (beyond Stage 1/Esplanade Drive) will be publicly notified separately and a later date. Therefore, any submissions made should refer to the construction of Stage 1 of the boardwalk construction plan.
The proposed term is 30 years.

Decision
The application was approved on 23 December 2022. The concession is active from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2051.
