Permit requirements

A permit is required to hunt on public conservation land.

This hunting area is covered by an 'open area permit' – get it online or from a DOC office.

Dogs with a DOC permit (contact the relevant DOC office) and a current kiwi aversion certificate only.

About this hunting block

General information

Pigs are generally hunted in these reserves. Goats are present in low numbers.

Far North East Coast hunting blocks cover just around 3,775 ha, encompassing Waikaramu Lake Conservation Area, Rangaunu Conservation Area, Tokerau Beach Conservation Area, Lake Ohia Conservation Area, Paikauri Conservation Area, Paranui Scenic Reserve, and Otangaroa Conservation Area, Mangatete Farm Settlement Scenic Reserve, and Te Koroa Scenic Reserve.

East Coast hunting blocks consist mainly of wetlands, gumlands, dense mixed kauri/broadleaf forest, and kanuka shrubland.

These reserves are a mixture of outstanding wildlife and historic areas, home to various historic remnants, native animals and plants such as kiwi, kauri snails, and native fish.

Note to all hunters: other recreational users are in and around Tokerau Beach and the surrounding hunting blocks at different times of the year, including trampers using walking/tramping tracks.

Access

  • Waikaramu Lake Conservation Area: Shallow lake, wetland environment with lake margins consisting of manuka shrubland. Access is near Kaimaumau Road.
  • Mangatete Farm Settlement Scenic Reserve: Made of six small areas along ridge slopes. Mainly podocarp forest with taiaire and puriri, with some kauri present. Access is adjacent to roads near Church Road and Rileys Road east of Kaitaia. Landowner permission required.
  • Rangaunu Conservation Area: Low lying sand area on margins of Rangaunu Harbour. Manuka regenerating from pasture. Access is via tracks from Lake Ohia Road and Tahanga Road.
  • Tokerau Beach Conservation Area: A broad band of dune lands with associated wetlands extending almost the entire length of Tokerau Beach, across the base of the Karikari Peninsula to the Rangaunu Harbour. Mainly gumland scrub, manuka/kanuka and peat gumlands. Access via Inland Road and Tahanga Road.
  • Paranui Scenic Reserve: Dense mixed kauri/broadleaf forest with large emergent kauri, rata and rimu. Located adjacent to Paranui Valley Road, no formed tracks.
  • Lake Ohia Conservation Area: Lake bed with peat deposits, mud, sand and stumps of 30,000 year old kauri. Access via Lake Ohia Road.
  • Otangaroa: Otangaroa is made up of nine scattered blocks of forest in the headwaters of the Mangōnui Harbour, forming the eastern end of the Mangataniwha Range. Access is via forestry roads from the end of Kenana Road.
  • Te Koroa Scenic Reserve: Contiguous with the southern end of the Otangaroa block. Access is adjacent to Fern Flat Road.
  • Paikauri: Mainly regenerating kauri with secondary kanuka shrubland with small areas of broadleaf forest. Stoney Creek Farm Settlement Road passes through the reserve, no formed tracks. Landowner permission required.

Dogs

Hunting dogs only permitted in these reserves.

The number of hunting dogs is limited to three per permit.

Dogs are required to have current kiwi/bird aversion training certificates when hunting in Far North East Coast hunting areas.

Campsites

For hunters who wish to stay and explore the Far North, there is a DOC-managed campsite within Doubtless Bay: Maitai Bay campsite.

Additional information

  • No vehicles in reserves, foot access only.
  • No shooting within 200 m of walking tracks.
  • Centre Fire rifles only.
  • Traps for pest control may be present on any public conservation land. The traps may pose a risk to dogs. Keep your dog under control at all times.
