Tūrangi/Taupō hunting

Located in the Central North Island region

The Tūrangi/Taupō area offers a wide range of hunting opportunities. The sika herd in the Kaimanawa Forest Park is internationally renowned and regarded by hunters as a valuable recreational resource.

The area covers the Central North Island, taking in Tongariro National Park, Erua and Tongariro forests and the Kaimanawa Mountains.

It offers hunters excellent opportunity to hunt sika, red deer, wild pig and goats. Some of these herds, particularly the world renowned sika herd, present the hunter with a chance to bag trophy animals of a world class standard.

SH1 offers excellent access right through this area, with numerous side roads and highways providing access to hunting on public conservation land.

Climate

The climate in the central north island is a climate of some extremes, with high summer temperatures ranging into the high 20s celcius, but with the potential for snow on the higher areas even in summer.

Hunters need to prepare for this wide variety of possible climactic conditions.
