Tauranga area

Northern Kaimai (Karangahake to Wharawhara)

Karangahake Gorge – closures:

The underground tunnels on the Windows Walk and Underground Pumphouse in the Karangahake Gorge are closed following an inspection.

  • Work is required on the Windows Walk Tunnels to ensure public safety and it's planned to open the tunnels by Christmas.
  • The tunnels on the underground pumphouse track require further investigation to ensure public safety and will not be re-opened before Christmas.

The Talisman Battery Loop Walk leading to the Windows is still open and offers great history, scenery, and views. Crown Tramway Track is open giving views of the Windows portals from the gorge below.

On-going vegetation control work will be taking place at Karangahake Gorge and Victoria Battery. Report any vandalism or graffiti that you see. Thank you to the Department of Corrections for their on-going assistance at Karangahake Gorge and Victoria Battery.

Crown Tramway Track – occasional closures. The lower part of the Crown Tramway Track between the Karangahake Historic Walkway and the Underground Pump-house will regularly be closed when heavy rainfall events are forecast. These closures are to ensure public safety which could otherwise be compromised by weather induced slips and rock fall which are regular occurrences on this track. The Underground Pump-house and Dickey Flat Campsite would still be accessible via the Windows Walk when the lower Crown Tramway Track is closed. Check with the Tauranga Office + 64 7 578 7677 for the current status, or the call the DOC hotline 0800 DOC HOT (0800 362 468) at weekends and public holidays.
