Cape Reinga and Herekino Forest are both found in the Kaitaia area. The Herekino Forest is home to many rare and threatened species, including the North Island brown kiwi, long-tailed bat and kauri snail.
Whether spending the night at the Cape Brett Hut, kayaking out to Motuarohia/Roberton Island or hiking along the Omahuta Kauri Sanctuary Walk, the Bay of Islands area features a number of amazing outdoor opportunities.

Trounson Kauri Park and the Waipoua and Trounson Kauri forests are found in the Kauri Coast area. In Waipoua Forest you can walk to Tane Mahuta - the largest living kauri.
