Northland

Whether you are looking for a remote adventure, a scenic “back to wilderness” spot to camp, a pleasant walk through the bush among giant kauri, or an underwater experience at one of the world’s top dive spots, Northland is the place to be.

Northland was the cradle of both Maori and European settlement of New Zealand and Northland’s landscapes, historic sites and buildings reflect a fascinating and turbulent past.

Kaitaia area

Cape Reinga and Herekino Forest are both found in the Kaitaia area. The Herekino Forest is home to many rare and threatened species, including the North Island brown kiwi, long-tailed bat and kauri snail.

Bay of Islands

Whether spending the night at the Cape Brett Hut, kayaking out to Motuarohia/Roberton Island or hiking along the Omahuta Kauri Sanctuary Walk, the Bay of Islands area features a number of amazing outdoor opportunities.

Whangarei area

DOC conservation lands in Northland's Whangarei area include Tangihua Forest, Motutara Recreation area and more. Your explorations might include a walk on Piroa Falls Track or visiting Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve.

Kauri Coast

Trounson Kauri Park and the Waipoua and Trounson Kauri forests are found in the Kauri Coast area. In Waipoua Forest you can walk to Tane Mahuta - the largest living kauri.
