Almer Hut is one of the most famous huts in the Southern Alps. It sits above Franz Josef Glacier with excellent views down the valley and across to the high peaks.

Heritage

This is the third structure to be known by this name. The building was prefabricated and air-dropped onto the site at the north side of Franz Josef Glacier in 1950. It was upgraded in 1992, and during subsequent staff visits. A new toilet was installed in 1995.

It's of a few examples of a distinctive type of hut built between the packing and helicopter eras.

The maintenance of Almer Hut is supported by Franz Josef Glacier Guides.
