This is one of seven Great Walk huts on the Heaphy Track.
It's on the edge of Gouland Downs and is many people's favourite. Listen for great spotted kiwi at night.
The hut is named after John Saxon who surveyed the track in 1886.
Facilities
All huts on the Heaphy Track have heating, long drop toilets supplied with toilet paper, and cold running water. Saxon Hut also has gas cooking facilities but you'll need to bring your own cooking utensils.
All huts have communal sleeping arrangements; Saxon Hut has platform bunks. Mattresses are provided but you'll need to bring your own sleeping bag.
There are no showers in any of the huts. Saxon Hut also has no lighting.
Hut rangers move between huts in the summer. As well as checking hut bookings, they are able to provide information about the track and weather.
