Boyd hut sits above the Ngaruroro Valley and is popular with hunters and hikers alike. To access the hut, there is an airstrip in the valley for private use with DOC permit. Or make it part of a multi-day hike from either Taharua Road or Clements Road ends.
The hut itself has a central kitchen area with wood burner, table and a sink with internal water supply. There are separate bunk rooms to either side, each sleeps eight. A wide verandah runs along the front of the hut with great views out on to the valley and airstrip below.
For an even better view, head out behind the hut past the water tanks. There is a track (with a few markers) that heads up above the bush line to the Boyd Rocks. It is a steep climb, but worth it for the magnificient panorama over the whole Kaimanawa Forest Park.
