The Hakarimata Scenic Reserve is made up of a north and south block bisected by a strip of private land. The mountain range is covered with podocarp/hardwood forest. The terrain is rolling to the west and steep to the east. The total area of the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve is 1800 ha.
There are three access points to the Reserve: off Waingaro Road next to Perry's Quarry, from Brownlee Avenue off the Hakarimata Road, and from Parker Road in the north. The Hakarimata Range is a popular walking area close to Hamilton with the Hakarimata Walkway traversing the crest of the range.
When hunting in Hakarimata Scenic Reserve, hunters must have a thorough understanding of the public conservation land boundary to avoid trespassing on the contiguous (unfenced) privately owned bush.
