Greenstone/Caples Recreational Hunting Area (RHA)

Located in the Otago region

The Greenstone/Caples Recreational Hunting Area (RHA) is 18,000 hectares in size and is a restricted hunting area reserved for the hunting of fallow deer, from 1 April to 30 September. Permits are issued for blocks within the area by ballot.

Near Glenorchy, the main access point is the Greenstone road end, with other access possible from the Routeburn.

Climate

The climate is wet and moist, prone to high rainfall events, being adjacent to the Main Divide.

Ballots

Permits are issued by two ballot draws - one for April/May (the roar) and the other for June to September. Ballots and application process.

Seasonal closure

From 1 October to 31 March the Greenstone/Caples RHA is closed to hunting.
