You can hunt pigs in the Hokianga hunting blocks.

About this hunting block

Pigs are generally hunted in these reserves. Goats are present in low numbers. 

General information

The Hokianga hunting blocks encompass Pareokawa Water Conservation Scenic Reserve, Mangonuiowae Wildlife Management Reserve, Te Pouahi Conservation Area, Paponga Conservation Area, Motukaraka Scenic Reserve, Tapuwae Scenic Reserve, Rangiora Conservation Area and Te Karae Conservation Reserve.

The  Hokianga reserves cover a mixture of coastal hardwood forest with kauri and kanuka/manuka shrubland, scattered totara, coastal dune systems and mud flats. All are high-value habitats.

All these reserves are outstanding wildlife habitats, home to various native animals from bats and possibly kōkako, to kūkupa, kiwi, kauri snails, and NZ dotterels.

Access

  • Pareokawa Water Conservation Scenic Reserve and Mangonuiowae Wildlife Management Reserve: via Hicks Road, Broadwood. Land owner permission required.
  • Te Pouahi Conservation Area: accessible by boat from Opononi or at low tide along beach from Matihetehi/Mitimiti.
  • Paponga Conservation Area: access close to Pawarenga Road, Pawarenga.
  • Motukaraka Scenic Reserve: via Paponga Rd and West Coast Road.
  • Tapuwae Scenic Reserve: no road access.
  • Rangiora Conservation Area: adjacent to West Coast Road, on the margin of Hokianga Harbour.
  • Te Karae Conservation Area: no easy access. Land owner permission required.

Dogs

Hunting dogs only permitted in these reserves.

The number of hunting dogs is limited to three per permit.

Dogs are required to have current kiwi/bird aversion training certificates when hunting in Warawara and Hokianga public conservation land.

Campsites

No DOC campsites in this area.

Additional information

  • No vehicles in reserves, foot access only.
  • No shooting within 200 m of walking tracks.
  • Centre Fire rifles only.
  • Traps for pest control may be present on any public conservation land. The traps may pose a risk to dogs. Keep your dog under control at all times.
