The Lake Sumner Recreational Hunting Area (RHA) encompasses part or all of the Nina, Doubtful Range, North Hurunui and Hurunui hunting blocks.

The hatching on the map shows the boundary of the Lake Sumner RHA over these hunting blocks.

Recreational hunting areas

Recreational hunting areas or RHAs were set aside by the New Zealand Forest Service for the enjoyment of recreational hunting. Provided recreational hunters keep wild animal numbers at acceptable levels, commercial wild animal recovery is not permitted.

History

Lake Sumner RHA was gazetted in 1981 when this area was managed by NZFS until DOC was established in 1987. The adjoining Lewis Park National Reserve (then managed by the Department of Lands and Survey) and new public conservation land is therefore not part of the gazetted Lake Sumner RHA.

Helicopters

The public conservation lands coloured red on the map below are excluded from Wild Animal Recovery Operations (WARO). This means that using aircraft to commercially hunt and recover wild animals is not permitted.

Helicopters with approved concessions are still permitted to drop off recreational hunters in Lake Sumner Forest Park.

There may be avalanche danger
