Tahr sighting and control maps 2024/25
Introduction
View maps of tahr sightings and control from DOC operations undertaken since 1 July 2024.Maps are posted to this web page following tahr control operations. These maps show where operations have taken place and how many tahr have been controlled.
As DOC does not target identifiable male tahr outside of the national parks (Management Unit 4), observations of identifiable males across parts of 425,000 ha of public conservation land have been recorded and are shared here to help hunters plan their next hunt.
DOC aerial control within the feral range, which includes all Management Units, is underway under the 2024/25 Tahr Control Operational Plan, which runs through to 30 June 2025.
2024/25 control updates
Aerial control (DOC’s official control, and Aerial Assisted Trophy Hunting Offsets) is complete within Management Unit 4b (Aoraki Mt Cook) for 2024/25. Hunters can hunt in this area confident of not encountering an aerial control operation.
DOC is only targeting all tahr (including identifiable males) inside Aoraki/Mount Cook and Westland Tai Poutini National Parks (Management Unit 4), and outside the feral range. This will help DOC to meet its legal obligations and protect these special places.
All aerial control inside the feral range is scheduled to conclude by mid-November, to avoid control during kid-drop and during peak hunting/holiday periods (summer holidays, the roar etc). This web page will be updated during that time, outlining areas where aerial control has concluded, to help hunters plan their hunts.
Ground-based control operations are planned for MU2 and MU6 during Spring of 2024 and Summer/Autumn of 2025.
Aerial control of tahr will continue outside the feral range throughout the year.
