Moonlight Tops Hut

Located in Paparoa National Park in the West Coast region

This is a 20-bunk Great Walk hut on the Paparoa Track.

Moonlight Tops Hut provides spectacular views across the Punakaiki River headwaters to the Pike Stream escarpment and north across the Paparoa National Park.

A hut ranger is based at the hut in the summer. As well as checking bookings, they are able to provide information about the track and weather.

Facilities and services

All huts on the Paparoa Track have:

  • heating
  • long drop toilets supplied with toilet paper, and
  • cold running water.

The huts have:

  • gas cooking facilities,
  • sinks with cold running water inside the hut, and
  • mattresses on the bunks.

You'll need to bring your own cooking equipment and sleeping bag as these are not supplied. For example, billy, bowl, utensils.

There are no showers in any of the huts.

Fees

1 October – 30 April

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $74 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $37 per person, per night

International visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $111 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): $56 per person, per night​

Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate.

1 May– 30 June, 1-30 September

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $58 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $29 per person, per night

1 July – 31 August

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $48 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $24 per person, per night

Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets cannot be used at this hut.
