Port William Hut

Located in Rakiura National Park and Stewart Island/Rakiura in the Southland region

This is a 24-bunk Great Walk hut located on the Rakiura Track in the Stewart Island/Rakiura area.

Fees

In the Great Walks season (1 October – 30 April)

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand*:

  • Adult (18+ years): $44 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $22 per person, per night

International visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $66 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): $33 per person, per night

Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate.

1 May – 30 June 2024

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $32 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): free

1 July – 30 September 2024

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $31 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $15 per person per night

Backcountry Hut Passes and Backcountry Hut Tickets cannot be used at this hut.

Boil water before use

Water at this hut is not treated and needs to be boiled before use. High rat numbers on Stewart Island/Rakiura increase the risk of tank water being contaminated.

What to take

Huts have basic facilities. You'll need to take:

  • sleeping bag
  • cooking stove, gas, pots/pans and utensils
  • toilet paper
  • rubbish bag
  • newspaper/firelighters and matches/lighter for the wood burner/fire
  • torch.
