Conroys Creek Historic Sites

Located in Alexandra area in the Otago region

Explore the historic relics and admire the views in the Aldinga Conservation Area. Conroys Dam is a popular picnic and swimming spot.

The route in the Aldinga Conservation Area is marked with orange pegs. It follows a 4WD track on the true right bank of Conroys Creek at first, then a foot trail leading to sluicings. There is a well-preserved rock shelter under overhanging bluffs immediately above Conroys Gully (about 30 min from the start of the track).

There are further alluvial gold workings on the left bank of Conroys Gully. A 4WD track then follows a pylon line back to the car park, via another ford of the Conroys Gully.

From Alexandra, follow Earnscleugh Road for about 1 km before turning left onto Chapman Road and then left again onto Conroys Road. A further 1 km on, turn right at a signpost indicating Conroys Dam. Travel along a gravel road past the dam wall to the car park.

The road upstream of the dam wall can be muddy in winter and may require a 4WD. If parking before this section, add another 30 min to walking time.

The area is dominated by the tilted block mountains of the Kopuwai/Old Man Range. The southeastern side is split by eroded fault scarps. Weathered schist has exposed a close pattern of steep V-shaped valleys and ridges with countless outcrops and crags of schist on the slopes above.

Gold mining sites on Earnscleugh Station cover the entire history of gold mining in New Zealand from the earliest gold rush days in Conroys Gully in 1862 to modern workings above the Fraser Dam. Numerous Chinese and European miners worked claims here.

This was an area of very early and rich workings. The hills and gullies are dotted with the remains of water races, ruined huts and heaps of gravel tailings from sluicing for gold.

In the 1980s, the area was used as part of the set for the film Illustrious Energy (1988), which showcased the life of Chinese miners prospecting for gold in Central Otago in the 1890s despite facing racism, isolation and extreme weather.

Conroys Dam was built in 1935 for the Last Chance Irrigation Scheme to provide irrigation for orchards on Conroys and Earnscleaugh flats. The dam still services its original function.
