7 km one way
This well-graded track descends gradually from the carpark. It follows the river along the valley floor then climbs up through beautiful beech forest to Speargrass Hut – set in a clearing with mountain views.
It can be very cold and in winter and there may be snow on the track.
Understand if you are ready for this tramp
Watch the NZ Mountain Safety Council’s walk-through video which takes you through how to prepare for this track. Including facilities, key decision points, hazards and typical conditions for the area.
The track starts from the car park at the end of Mt Robert Road, off SH 63 west of St Arnaud.
- The gate at the bottom of Mount Robert Road is locked when the road is icy.
- Be prepared with warm and waterproof clothing. Nelson Lakes National Park is in an alpine area – freezing conditions can occur at any time of year.
- No rubbish facilities are provided – carry out all your rubbish.
- Biting sandflies can detract for your experience at the lakes, especially during the summer months – cover up and apply a good quality insect repellant to exposed skin.
- Wasps are a known hazard and are particularly common from December until April – carry antihistamine if you are allergic to their stings.
Nelson Lakes - thefts from vehicles
Isolated carparks are prone to theft. Don't leave any valuables in your vehicle. A bag storage facility is available at the Rotoiti/Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre.
