Fees and bookings

Introduction

Learn about fees, bookings and conditions associated with booking the Routeburn Track.

You need to pay fees to stay at the huts and campsites on this track. Fees vary depending on when you go.

Hut fees

In the Great Walks season (15 November 2024 – 30 April 2025)

Note: Due to repair work, the Routeburn Track Great Walk season starts on 15 November 2024.

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $80 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $40 per person, per night

International visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $120 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $60 per person, per night

Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate.

1 May – 30 June

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $30 per person, per night
  • Child (17 years and under): $15 per person, per night

1 July – 14 November

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18 years and over): $25 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $12.50 per person, per night

Campsite fees

  • Child (5 to 17 years): $12 per person, per night

  • Child (5 to 17 years): $19 per person, per night

Outside the Great Walks season (1 May 2024 – 28 October 2024)

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $10 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $5 per person, per night

Bookings

Bookings are open for the 2024/25 season.

This year we have combined our Great Walks and huts and campsites booking systems. You only need a single account to book the Great Walks and all other accommodation.

If you don’t already have an account on the existing huts and campsites booking system you will need to create a new log in and account at DOC booking services. 

In the Great Walks season (15 November 2024 – 30 April 2025)

Bookings are required for huts and campsites.

Book Routeburn Track huts online.

If you don’t have a valid booking for your stay, you may be charged a penalty, or turned away if the hut/campsite is full.

Outside the Great Walks season (1 May 2024 – 28 October 2024)

Bookings are not required.

Bunks in huts are first come, first served.

Payment is with Backcountry Hut Tickets or a Backcountry Hut Pass – buy these from a DOC visitor centre before you go.
