Waioeka Conservation Area

Located in the East Coast region

This 39,200 ha area covers a large part of the Waioeka River catchment, and is an area of outstanding natural value.

Access to the Waioeka Conservation Area can be found:

  • Off SH2 on Redpath Rd (via Wairata Rd) approx. 40 km from Opotiki
  • Moanui Rd (via Te Wera Rd), 87 km from Opotiki
  • Koranga Valley Rd

Whio or blue ducks can be found at the headwaters of the Waioeka River and tributaries. New Zealand falcon can also be seen, as well as kākā, kiwi, and other common bush birds including kererū.
