Whakatāne River area routes

Located in Te Urewera in the East Coast region

Several challenging routes are possible in the Whakatāne River area. These should only be attempted by trampers with a high level of backcountry experience and skills including navigation and survival skills.

Te Urewera is recognised in New Zealand law as a living person. Te Urewera is spoken for and governed by a board. Care for Te Urewera, including the tracks and facilities, is carried out by Te Uru Taumatua – Ngāi Tūhoe’s operational entity.

The huts listed on this page are in the process of being removed.

Ruatoki Road end to Wharekahika Hut

TIme: 3 - 5 hr

This section of track is not well marked. From the road end follow the track up the Whakatāne River until you reach the location where Taimatua Stream enters the river. On the true left of the stream follow the horse track through grass and regenerating native bush towards the top of the ridge. Follow the ridge past spot height 567 and cross the small stream. After 1 km look out for the track turnoff to Wharekahika Hut. From here it is another 2-3 km south to reach the hut.

Apiti Hut to Twain (Waipotiki) Hut

Time: 2 - 3 hr

To access this route you must first walk from Ruatoki Road end to Apiti Hut. From Apiti Hut follow the Opaewai Stream upstream for about 4 km to reach the main Waipotiki Stream forks. Take the true right fork and continue upstream for 200 metres. The track to Twain Hut (2 bunks) is on the true left and is approximately 200 metres out of the stream.

The main access point to walks along the Whakatāne River is from Ruatoki.

There are many areas of private (Maori) land in this area (mainly large clearings and areas of manuka forest). Access is permitted through these areas but no camping or hunting is allowed – stay on the tracks.

Security of vehicles at track ends can be an issue. Contact either Robert Black (+64 7 312 9469) or Basil Tamiana (+64 7 312 9176) who can assist with providing secure locations to park vehicles.
