Tongariro Alpine Crossing is delivered in partnership between DOC and Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.
Bookings are recommended for all visitors using any part of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing track including:
- Tongariro Alpine Crossing full and part track users
- Te Araroa walkers
- Soda Springs track users
- Tongariro Northern Circuit day visitors
- Mangatepopo Hut day visitors.
School groups, tramping clubs and climbers should also book.
There is no cost to book.
Visitors who arrive at the start of the track without a booking will not be penalised. We will not be implementing a cap for the 2023/2024 summer season.
Visitors who have a Tongariro Northern Circuit hut or campsite booking are exempt from booking through this system.
How to book
Online
You only need to complete one booking per group. You will need a contact phone number, email address and the name of your group leader. The group leader will receive the booking receipt and necessary information on behalf of the group.
At a visitor centre
You can ask any visitor centre, local information centre or isite to make a booking for you.
With your walking guide or shuttle service
Your walking guide or transport operator might make the booking for you. You will need to ask the provider if they offer this service.
Booking confirmation
Once you book, you, your group leader or service provider will be sent a booking receipt email.
Ensure you save this email as your group will need to show a digital or paper copy to rangers at the carpark.
If you misplace your booking, complete the online form again.
How to rebook
You can book a new date if you need to by completing the online form again. There is an option to select a rebooked trip.
You do not need to cancel your booking if your plans change.
