The track starts on the edge of Tongariro Forest and follows old milling trails through the bush. The area is home to a wide variety of bird life.
17 km north of Whakapapa village, turn off SH47 onto John McDonald Road, this is a gravel road that can be rough – 4WD vehicles are strongly recommended. Turn right onto Pukehinau Road and look for the Taurewa Track sign.
