Nestled in a peaceful bush setting, the Tongariro National Trout Centre provides a peek into the world of trout at Taupō.

It has played an important role over the years in educating people about the fishery, and raising awareness among the public of the importance of freshwater conservation and the need to create a sustainable fishery resource.

You can wander through the Genesis Energy Freshwater Aquarium and hatchery facility, look through an underwater trout viewing chamber or take a stroll along the Tongariro River.  The River Walk Visitor Centre is open to the public, full of interesting displays about the Taupō trout fishery and freshwater sustainability.

Location

It is located 4 kilometres south of Tūrangi on State Highway 1.

The Tongariro National Trout Centre provides a great learning environment. Getting students to be 'hands on' is a big part of our approach.

This is a state of the art freshwater aquarium highlighting New Zealand's native fish and the threats they face.

The Hatchery was the hub of the centre for many years, and although it no longer raises fish on a large scale, it still is an interesting spot to visit.

The River Walk Visitor Centre is an ideal place to take the family and explore the history of the fishery in detail, as well as learn about the importance of freshwater to all of us in our daily lives.

Take the opportunity to visit the whio crèche to see this unique and endangered bird up close.
