Protecting marine species
Introduction
We work to protect marine species including dolphins and sharks.
Our work with Hector’s and Māui dolphin
Our work with these dolphins is managed under the Hector’s and Māui Dolphin Threat Management Plan.
Protected species bycatch
The Conservation Services Programme (CSP) monitors the impact of commercial fishing on protected species, studies species populations and looks at ways to mitigate bycatch.
Revitalising the Gulf: Government action to restore the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana
Revitalising the Gulf addresses the management of one of the country’s most valued and intensively used coastal spaces. It sets out a package of marine conservation and fisheries management actions to restore a healthy Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana.
Seismic Surveys Code of Conduct
The Code provides effective, practical mitigation measures for minimising acoustic disturbance of marine mammals during seismic surveys.
Seabird prioritisation framework
A prioritisation framework is being developed for at-sea threats to New Zealand seabirds. These tools will drive future research to better understand, and manage, these threats.
SMART initiative
This initiative aims to minimise the impacts of boats and other watercraft on marine mammals. The initiative increases awareness, provides education, and supports safer interactions.
