Heritage sites in Coromandel

Camp here and explore the remains of gold mining days on numerous walks in the area.

Restoration progress is being made on some of the Coromandel's offshore islands including Cuvier Island, the Mercury Islands and the Aldermen Islands. These islands are all predator free, and no public access is allowed on them to protect their biodiversity heritage.

A short walk from Hahei beach or the end of Pa Road. The track leads into Te Pare Point Historic Reserve where you can visit the remains of two pā sites.

There are many campsites beside the Kauaeranga River.

Learn about Opera Point Pa, a good example of a headland pa, and Craig’s Sawmill in the Opera Point Historic Reserve.

The pā at Opito Point is a good example of a medium sized headland pa. It occupies the whole of the point at the eastern end of the Kūaotunu Peninsula.

Sailors Grave Memorial is part of the historic reserve maintained by the Royal New Zealand Navy.

An impressive pa once stood on the narrow rocky headland that juts out into Whitianga Harbour.
