Summary
An endemic seabird, the black petrel (Procellaria parkinsoni) breeds on Little and Great Barrier Islands, New Zealand in burrows found 300 metres above sea level. The main breeding area in Great Barrier Island is around the highest point, Mount Hobson. In the 1997/98 season, as in previous years, the three census grids and 100 study burrows were intensively monitored during late January and February. During the 1998/99 breeding season, 202 burrows were identified, in 1999/2000 breeding season, 250 burrows were identified and intensively monitored over summer.
