Flying start for Conservation Week

Together with DOC, 25 members of the Air New Zealand Greenteam, a group of environmentally likeminded Air New Zealanders who work together to make a difference and protect the environment, spent the day searching for and removing karaka seedlings from Kapiti island, enabling other native species to thrive.

The event was a great opportunity for staff and their families to get out to the island. Kapiti Marine Reserve, adjacent to the island, is part of DOC’s Marine Sentinel Site programme which is supported by Air New Zealand.

DOC marine sentinel sites will deliver collaborative science that enables New Zealand to make wise decisions for a healthy marine environment.

“Getting out and volunteering gives us a unique opportunity to see the special places where we are working together with DOC. We love being a part of this journey for New Zealand communities” says Shelley Crawford, Air New Zealand’s Greenteam coordinator.

Air New Zealand is a National Partner for Conservation with DOC, and provides support and funding for several biodiversity initiatives around the country. This Conservation Week, the Air New Zealand Greenteam has provided boots-on-the-ground support in five regions across New Zealand.  

“It was fantastic to get the Greenteam’s support to help Kapiti Island thrive– when everyone pitches in we can really make progress to restore our natural places” says Emma Rowell, Biodiversity Ranger for DOC.

Kapiti Marine Reserve is about 60 km from Wellington city and covers an area between the Waikanae river mouth and Kapiti Island, as well as an area to the west of Kapiti Island. It is known for its abundant sea life and as a top dive spot in New Zealand.
