Temporary closure for Windows Walk
Scheduled visitor safety works are temporarily closing the Windows Walk in Karangahake Gorge, but the door remains open for other stunning heritage experiences.

Date:  18 November 2024

The Windows Walk will be closed to all visitors for safety purposes from 18 to 29 November while work occurs.

DOC Tauranga Operations Manager Kristine Theiss says these works will enrich the visitor experience and uphold safety at this iconic heritage site.

“It’s time for the annual safety inspection of structural integrity in the tunnel network,” says Kristine. “We’re also installing additional timber supports to further strengthen and protect the heritage character of this site.

“While the Windows Walk is out of action, we encourage people to explore other walks in the area, like the Karangahake Gorge Tunnel Loop Walk and Owharoa Falls.

“The Windows Walk will be back in action by December, ready for the busy summer season.”

The closure from 18 to 29 November 2024 will affect access between Dickey Flat Campsite and the Karangahake Gorge car park. For updates, check the Karangahake Windows Walk webpage.
