Date: 06 December 2024
A section of the Paparoa Great Walk, between the Pike29 Track junction and the Pororari Hut, is currently closed because of a slip and will remain closed until Saturday 21 December 2024.
Greymouth District Operations Manager Chris Hickford says DOC were made aware of the slip yesterday.
“Yesterday, we received news of a significant slip on the Paparoa Track. As a result, the decision has been made to close this section of the track.”
“Our staff were at the site today assessing the damage,” he says.
Chris says the slip is approximately 25-30 metres wide and extends for some distance above and below where the track was.
“Unfortunately, it is on a steep slope with no safe detour above or below and it will require significant repairs to re-establish a safe route. We estimate that the repairs will take two weeks to complete.”
Access to the Pororari Hut is still possible via the northern end of the track. In the south, alternative access on and off the Paparoa Track is still possible via the Pike29 Track down into the Pike River Valley.
Additional section closed this Sunday due to high winds
In addition to the current closure in place between the Pike29 Track Junction and the Pororari Hut, due to high winds forecast the section between Ces Clark Hut and the Pike29 Track Junction will be closed from 12 pm to 10 pm on Sunday 8 December 2024.
