From 15 December 2024, locals and tourists will once again have access to the beloved site, traditionally used by iwi as a source of healing. The hot pools are taonga for many in the area, from whānau celebrating events, a family day out, or a much-needed solo healing soak.

A failing septic system forced the closure of the hot pools in the summer of 2022, and the effects of Cyclone Gabrielle significantly delayed procurement processes and restoration efforts. Ultimately, Enviro Water were able to repair and upgrade the site.

Leadership of the site is driven collectively by Nga Hua o Mōrere Steering Roopu, including representatives of Rongomaiwahine, Rakaipaaka, and DOC.

Department of Conservation Operations Manager Matt Tong, who sits on the Nga Hua o Mōrere Steering Roopu, says reopening the site is a win for everyone.

“Nga hua o Mōrere is finally reawakened,” says Matt. “We’ve heard the community and know how precious this place is to everyone. We are thrilled to be reopening this taonga.

“As well as the benefits for people accessing these mineral-rich thermal waters in amongst the beautiful coastal native forest, we’re hoping the reopening will also help the local economy, maybe stimulating some other small businesses to provide local employment opportunities.

“It’s exciting to see Nga Hua o Mōrere move forward, and we look forward to what this new era will bring with all of us working together”.
