Part of track closed at Ōhope Scenic Reserve

Introduction
Visitors using the popular Fairbrother Loop in Ōhope Scenic Reserve will have no “loop” option for the next few weeks.Date: 13 July 2020
Due to a washout, the stream side of the Fairbrother Loop (adjacent to Te Hiku o te Tuna Stream) is impassable and will need significant repairs or a realignment.
The washout was discovered by DOC rangers who went out to assess damage after a recent storm. The area was subsequently cordoned off with signage and emergency tape.
DOC Recreation and Historic Supervisor Vince Copeland says the Fairbrother Loop is one of the most popular walking tracks around Whakatāne.
“It is used by locals and visitors, so a closure like this has a significant effect on the community. Fortunately, it hasn’t impacted on the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi track and people can still walk on the uphill side to enjoy the views out to Moutohorā and Whakaari.”
While there is no date for a re-opening, DOC is committed to keeping the public updated with developments.
In the meantime, visitors need to plan for an out-and-back walk on the section of the loop that is still open. Both effort and time to complete the walk should be much the same as doing the whole loop.
The Fairbrother Loop is in the first portion of the Ōhope Scenic Reserve.
Night or day it's an exciting place to visit as there are many different species that you may encounter or hear, including Toutouwai/North Island Robin, Tui, Korimako/Bellbird and Weka.
