Introduction

Ongoing dumping of rubbish and even animal carcasses is making what should be a family-friendly Whanganui park into an eyesore.

Date:  29 March 2019

DOC staff and volunteers have put considerable labour and love into Gordon Park Scenic Reserve and are frustrated and annoyed at the continued dumping of rubbish.

DOC Biodiversity Ranger Claire Dowsett says chickens and other birds are among things being dumped.

“Cats have been dumped recently, this is a huge concern given the detrimental effect cats can have on our native birdlife. Burnt out cars have been dumped without considering the huge fire risks to our lovely scenic reserve.”

The Okoia reserve on the corner of No.3 Line and Kaimatira Road has easy access for all and should be treated with respect, say the groups whose combined efforts make sure tracks and planting are cared for and weeding and pest control is maintained.

If anyone has any information regarding the rubbish dumping, please call DOC or the police.
