A rāhui (ban) on the collection of shellfish or fishing on a Northland beach has been imposed following the stranding and subsequent deaths of two humpback whales earlier this week.
Te Rorora has imposed a rāhui on Baylys Beach to Mahuta Gap, which is supported by DOC.
There is currently discharge from both animals and this is likely to continue for the next few days as the whales deteriorate and are disposed of.
It is not known how long the rāhui will be in place for.
