Make a play date with nature

Introduction
Encouraging children to explore nature will be the focus of National Children’s Day celebrations, to be held at Ivon Wilson Park in Te Anau on Sunday 4 March.Date: 23 February 2018
Jo Mann, from the Te Anau library, is helping to organise the event and says giving children the chance to explore the world around them helps develop a love for the outdoors.
“We really enjoy celebrating the younger members of our community. Playing in nature not only lets children learn about the environment, it also provides opportunities to make new friends with other children who might share their love of bugs or painting pinecones.”
John Carter from Fiordland Kindergarten has seen first-hand the benefits of outdoor play. Their Nature Discovery programme runs each term on Monday and Wednesday mornings.
“The children love Nature Discovery because of the open-ended learning opportunities available outside a classroom.”
“The children develop amazing teamwork abilities, and are able to play in any weather. They actively seek out puddles to jump in and mud to play with and enjoy seeing their wild places change in various weather and different seasons!” John Carter says.
Painting, adventure ropes, music and a mud kitchen are a few of the activities on offer during the National Children’s Day event. There will also be sausage sizzle, provided by Plunket.
DOC Community Ranger, Sarah Afriyie-Agyemang says the event is a special occasion for families to come together and have fun.
“Children’s Day is always a great day out for kids and their families. We are very lucky to have great reserves and parks on our doorstep. This event will be filled with ideas on how families can enjoy these open spaces all together.”
The event is run in partnership with Kids Restore the Kepler, Fiordland Kindergarten, Southern Stars, Blue Duck Early Learning Centre, Just 4 Kids, Plunket, the DOC and the Southland District Council.
'Play Date with Nature' will take place in Te Anau's Ivon Wilson Park on Sunday 4 March, between 11 am and 3 pm. The event will go ahead regardless of almost any weather so be sure to dress appropriately.
All are welcome to enjoy the day. Kids can bring their bikes but please remember to leave your four-legged friends at home.
