Okura Bush Walkway closed to protect the public and kauri

Introduction
DOC has closed the Okura Bush Walkway while a contractor repairs damage to the track caused by heavy and persistent rain.Date: 18 August 2017
The wet weather has washed away sections of the Okura Bush Walkway and blocked drains. These sections of track are now very muddy and slippery making them unsafe for walkers and runners.
“The muddy track also increases the risk of spreading kauri dieback, a disease that kills kauri of all ages,” says DOC Auckland Mainland Operations Manager Nick Turoa.
“We’ve closed the track to protect the public and to protect kauri.
“To keep themselves safe, as well as kauri in the Okura reserve and at other sites, we are asking people not to enter the track while it’s closed.
“The contractor anticipates work to make the damaged sections of the track safe for people and kauri will take about two weeks. It may take longer depending on the weather,” says Nick Turoa.
An alert informing the public of the closure has been posted on the Okura Bush Walkway page on the DOC website.
Closure signs have also been posted at the entrances to the track, at the northern Stillwater end and at the southern Haigh Access Road end.
