An aerial inspection of the Whanganui National Park and other reserves is underway today, says Conservation Services Manager George Taylor.
“We’ve closed facilities across the region as a precaution until we can get staff into these areas to do a more thorough inspection. Some areas are still cut off by slips and the flood waters remain high in the area so our facilities will stay closed until we can determine the extent of damage and prioritise repairs,” he said.
The closures include all tracks, huts and campsites on the Whanganui River Journey Great Walk.
The Whanganui DOC office is closed to members of the public while Taupō Quay is cordoned off, and DOC’s Pipiriki field base is the key Civil Defence contact point for the Pipiriki community.
