Introduction

Read the full terms and conditions of the 2024 Royal Cam Name the Chick competition.
  1. The promoter of the 'Name the chick' competition is the Department of Conservation (DOC). DOC can be contacted in relation to this competition by email at any time at competitions@doc.govt.nz.
  2. This competition consists of two parts with a name submission round and a name voting round.
  3. The competition is open to anyone.

Submissions

  1. The name nomination round of the competition will open on 29 July 2024 at 10 am and close 23 August 2024 at 5 pm (New Zealand Standard Time).
  2. Submissions must include a brief description behind the inspiration for the name.
  3. One submission allowed per person.
  4. All submissions must be received by 23 August 2024 at 5 pm (New Zealand Standard Time). Entries received after this closing time will not be considered.
  5. A panel of judges from DOC will then narrow down entries to the top 20 names based on the judging criteria below. The Te Poari a Pukekura (Pukekura Co-Management Trust) will then vote on their top 10 names.
  6. The judging criteria is as follows:
    • relevance to the theme of what happens on land impacts our oceans, the chick, colony or species.
    • originality and creativity of the name and inspiration.
    • reflective of the characteristics of northern royal albatross or their habitat on Pukekura/Taiaroa Head.
  7. The top 10 names will be added to the website for the public to vote a winning name. Voting will open 9 September 2024 at 9 am (New Zealand Standard Time) and close 16 September 2024 at 5 pm (New Zealand Standard Time).
  8. The winning name announced on 17 September 2024.
  9. DOC staff and their families are not eligible to enter.

Selecting a winner

  1. The main prize winner will be the person who submitted a name for the chick that has the highest votes by the public.
  2. If the winning name was nominated by more than one person, the final winner will be drawn at random by a DOC representative.
  3. The second-place prize will be the person who submitted a name for the chick that has the second highest votes by the public.
  4. If the second highest voted name was nominated by more than one person, the second-place prize winner will be drawn at random by a DOC representative.
  5. The spot prize winner will selected based upon the subjective view on the best photo submission. This will be judged by a DOC representative.
  6. All prize winners will be contacted by a DOC representative to ask for their postage address.
  7. The winner announcement date will be by the end of the following week after the competition closes.
  8. Finalists may be profiled in social media, in the media, or on the DOC website.
  9. Decisions of the judges are final on all matters relating to this promotion.

Prizes

  1. All prizes can be internationally shipped.
  2. The main prize package includes $300 (NZD) worth of sustainable/ environmentally friendly household products and a virtual tour of the Royal albatross colony at Pukekura Taiaroa Head, with Ranger Sharyn Broni.
  3. Second-place prize is $100 (NZD) worth of sustainable/ environmentally friendly household products.
  4. The spot-prize is a ‘Wildlife of Aotearoa’ book signed by author Gavin Bishop.
  5. Prizes cannot be exchanged or redeemed for the cash equivalent.

Content

  1. All winners must be available for promotional opportunities including, but not limited to, interviews for media and through blog articles featured on the DOC website, social media channels etc.
  2. Information provided to enter this competition will be held securely by DOC and used for the purpose of administering the competition.

Disclaimers

  1. The promoters reserve the right to terminate or change the competition or any or all of the prize components at any time without notice.
  2. If for any reason this competition is not capable of running as planned (due to any cause beyond the control of the competition organisers which corrupts or affects the administration security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of this promotion), the promotion may be abandoned or postponed at the discretion of the promoter. The organisers accept no responsibility for such an event.
  3. Entry into this prize draw is deemed acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. The competition and these Terms and Conditions are governed by New Zealand Law.
  4. This competition is in no way sponsored, endorsed, administered by or associated with X (Twitter), Facebook or Instagram.
