Mackintosh carpark to Lawrence Road end via Mackintosh Hut and Donald River

From Makintosh car park, the track drops down a steep but well graded track to the Tutaekuri River. The Tutaekuri River is crossed by a steel pedestrian bridge.

The track then climbs steeply – this section can be slippery, so we recommend good footwear and taking your time. Once the track reaches the top of Mackintosh Plateau, it continues on the flat through manuka and beech forest and through some open areas to the hut. This section of the track is new, as Cyclone Gabrielle destroyed a large section of the old track. The new track is steep in places, some experienced trampers walk up the creek to bypass the slip and then rejoin the old track.

From Mackintosh Hut, the track follows the edge of the plateau. The track then drops steeply into the Donald River valley.

The track crosses the river. There is no bridge, so assess the river carefully before crossing. Follow the track down the true left bank of Donald River. The track then crosses the river over a bridge and arrives at Lawrence campsite, shelter and road end.

Be ready for mountain weather

This is a mountainous area. Visitors should be prepared for sudden weather changes, whiteouts, high winds on the ranges and rapidly rising water levels in rivers and streams.

Stay safe when crossing rivers

If you plan to cross unbridged rivers, know how to cross safely and be prepared for if you cannot cross.

Do not cross if the river is flooded, you cannot find safe entry and exit points or are unsure it’s safe. Turn back or wait for the river to drop. If in doubt, stay out.

Expect a rough, slippery track

This is a backcountry tramping track and it is rough, muddy and slippery (especially after rain). It is best suited to experienced trampers with backcountry skills. You will need sturdy boots with good grip.

Fires

Extreme fire conditions can exist during summer. The park is a restricted fire area, which means permits to light fires are required all year round.
