Saxon Campsite

Located in Kahurangi National Park in the Nelson/Tasman region

This is a walk-in campsite on the Heaphy Track. Situated on the edge of Gouland Downs, you can listen for great spotted kiwi at night.

This is one of nine Great Walk campsites on the Heaphy Track. 

Facilities and services

All campsites on the Heaphy Track have water from a tap and toilets that are supplied with toilet paper. Saxon campsite has a long drop toilet and also sinks. It has wooden platforms for tent sites.

This campsite is beside Saxon Hut. Campers are not permitted to use hut facilities.

Hut rangers move between nearby huts in the summer. As well as checking campsite bookings, they are able to provide campers with information about the track and weather.

Fees

1 October – 30 April

New Zealand citizens and those ordinarily resident in New Zealand*:

  • Adult (18+ years): $19 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $9 per person, per night

International visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $28 per person, per night
  • Child (0 to 17 years): $14 per person, per night

Proof of eligibility is required for the New Zealand rate.

1 May – 30 September

For all visitors:

  • Adult (18+ years): $19 per person, per night
  • Child (5 to 17 years): $9 per person, per night

The DOC Campsite Pass cannot be used at this campsite.

It's a 1 hr 30 min walk from Gouland Downs hut and campsite and a 3 hr walk to James MacKay hut and campsite.
