Application by Pure Tūroa Limited to operate Tūroa Ski Area on Mt Ruapehu
Pure Tūroa Limited has been granted a 10-year concession to operate the Tūroa ski-field.

Outcome

On 6 April 2024, Conservation Minister Tama Potaka announced that Pure Tūroa Limited has been granted a 10-year concession to operate the Tūroa ski-field.

This decision follows a four-month concession process run by DOC, which included iwi engagement and consultation, and public notification and hearings. Feedback from this process was considered by the Minister when granting this concession.

The Minister of Conservation has received an application for lease/license concession for a 10-year period. This application is notified under section 17SC of the Conservation Act 1987.

Summary of proposal: Application to maintain and operate Tūroa Ski Area on Mount Ruapehu as previously undertaken by Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Limited.

Concession applied for: A commercial facility lease/license concession for the ski area. A lease has been requested for all buildings and the base plaza area. A licence has been requested for the remaining ski area boundary. The application also includes associated aircraft and filming activities.

Hearings were held in Ohakune and Tūrangi between 22 February and 27 February 2024. 

Submissions received

DOC has made no assessment of the validity of claims and views held by submitters in their current form. The opinions expressed are held by the individual submitter, and we have released these as a matter of public interest.  

Process

After submissions close:

  1. DOC will analyse and consider all submissions.
  2. A hearing will be held if there have been requests to be heard by the Director-General If you have expressed an interest in presenting your submission at a hearing, you'll be contacted by DOC regarding this.
  3. DOC will analyse and consider information raised at the hearing if a hearing occurred.
  4. DOC will make a recommendation to the Minister of Conservation.
  5. The Minister of Conservation will make a decision on the application.
