Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre
Visit the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre to learn about the natural and cultural values of the national park.

The visitor centre is located in Whakapapa Village, the main gateway into the park. It is New Zealand’s first national park and a UNESCO dual World Heritage Area recognised for its natural and cultural landscapes. 

Nau mai, haere mai. On arrival to the village call into the centre for an introduction to the national park. Get expert advice and in-depth local knowledge from our friendly staff on recreational opportunities, current safety messages, conservation and Māori history.

Getting there

We are is located on the corner of SH48 and Tawera Place in the centre of Whakapapa Village. 

From National Park Village, follow SH47 for about 9 km. Turn right into SH48. This turn off is signposted for the Chateau and Whakapapa. Drive for another 6 km and the visitor centre is on the left hand side of the road. There is parking on the opposite side of the road.

From Tūrangi, follow SH41 (3 km), SH47 (37 km), then SH48 (6 km). The travel time from Tūrangi is about 40 min.

  • 8 am – 4.30 pm daily
  • Closed Christmas Day 25 December
