North Taranaki Visitor Centre

North Taranaki Visitor Centre

Introduction

The visitor centre is located at Egmont Road end, the main gateway into the national park, Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, formerly known as Egmont National Park.

Visitor centre replacement project

Work to replace the aging North Taranaki Visitor Centre, within Te Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki, begins on Tuesday, 18 March 2025.

The project requires the installation of a temporary visitor centre– a portable building – while the old visitor centre is demolished, and then replaced.

A couple of carparks will be unavailable to visitors for several days, from 17 March 2025.

We strongly urge you to keep away from the construction area.

Temporary closure

The North Taranaki Visitor Centre will close temporarily 3:30 pm on 27 April, until 8:30 am on 2 May 2025.

This is to allow for Visitor Centre staff and equipment to be relocated into a temporary facility.

A DOC staff member will be on site during the temporary closure to provide advice and information to visitors.

The temporary facility will operate for two years, while a new Visitor Centre building is constructed.

Nau mai, haere mai. On arrival at the road end call into the centre for an introduction to the national park. Get expert advice and in-depth local knowledge from our friendly staff on recreational opportunities, current safety messages and conservation.

The visitor centre is at 945 m above sea level, it can get cold here so come prepared.
