How the Seabird-Safe Fishing Toolkit was developed
Learn about how the toolkit was created and who was involved.

This toolkit is in development. Send feedback to toolkit@doc.govt.nz.

The Seabird-Safe Fishing Toolkit was developed by the Southern Seabirds Trust in partnership with the Department of Conservation. The toolkit was funded with support from the Ministry for Primary Industries’ Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures fund and the New Zealand Nature Fund.

We established an Expert Panel, and Ground Truthing Group to guide us, and we worked with the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ocean and Fisheries Working Group.

Expert Panel

The Expert Panel includes some the world's leading scientists in the field of bycatch mitigation. The Expert Panel makes sure the Seabird-Safe Fishing Toolkit uses the best available science and delivers information that is accessible and accurate.

Ground Truthing Group

The Ground Truthing Group includes experts from leading tuna organisations who are working to improve fishing sustainability. The Ground Truthing Group identifies the most important information and how to communicate it.

APEC Ocean and Fisheries Working Group

The Seabird-Safe Fishing Toolkit was supported by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ocean and Fisheries Working Group. A roundtable with APEC economies was co-sponsored by:

  • People's Republic of China
  • Chile
  • Peru
  • Chinese Taipei
  • United States.
