Hut categories: facilities and fees
Introduction
DOC provides facilities and charges fees based on the category of the hut.Each hut is unique but the facilities and services provided in or near huts are divided into six categories:
- Great Walks huts
- Individually priced huts (including Serviced alpine huts)
- Serviced huts
- Standard huts
- Basic huts/bivvies
- Club huts.
The fees listed here apply to most huts in each category, but check individual huts as prices might vary.
Age ranges for fees
- Adult: 18+ years
- Child/youth: 5–17 years
- Infant: 0–4 years
Great Walks huts
Great Walk Huts are the most comfortable. They have mattresses, water supply, toilets, hand washing facilities and heating with fuel available. They may have solar lighting, cooking facilities with fuel and a hut warden.
There is differential pricing for international visitors, as well as seasonal pricing. Check individual hut pages for fees.
Individually priced huts
This category of huts covers those popular huts and Serviced alpine huts that have individual fees. The fees are not solely based on the hut standards or levels of service.

Serviced huts
Serviced huts have mattresses, water supply, toilets, handwashing facilities and heating with fuel available. They may have cooking facilities with fuel and a warden.
Fees for the hut
- Adult: $25 per night
- Child/youth: $12.50 per night
- Infant: free
Fees to camp at the hut
- Adult: $10 per night
- Child/youth: $5 per night
- Infant: free

Standard huts
Standard huts have mattresses, water supply and toilets. Wood heaters are provided at huts below the bush line.
- Adult: $10 per night
- Youth/Child: $5 per night

Basic huts/bivvies
Basic huts provide very basic shelter with limited facilities.
Fees: Free
Club huts
There are a variety of other huts on public conservation land that are open to the public. These include recreation club huts such as the New Zealand Alpine Club huts in Aoraki/Mt Cook, Westland and Mt Aspiring national parks and private bush cabins.
They have mattresses, a water supply, toilets and handwashing facilities. They may have heating and cooking facilities and some require a booking.
