Gas cooking facility removal
Due to health and safety and economic reasons the gas facilities at Mitre Flats Hut have been permanently removed. The Department of Conservation will continue to supply firewood to the hut, which will provide heating and also a cooking source via the woodstove installed. The hut will remain listed as a 'serviced' hut.
8 - 9 hr return
The track sidles up the true left of the Waingawa River, reaching Mitre Flats (and hut) in 4 - 5 hours. The return trip can be completed in 8 - 9 hours. You can enter and exit the Northern Crossing via this track.
From Masterton turn off State Highway 2 into Upper Plain Road and then into Upper Waingawa Road to the Pines carpark where the Barra Track begins.
Plan and prepare
Before you go into the outdoors, tell someone your plans and leave a date to raise the alarm if you haven't returned. To do this, use the New Zealand Outdoors Intentions process on the AdventureSmart website. It is endorsed by New Zealand's search and rescue agencies and provides three simple options to tell someone you trust the details about your trip.
